Beginning immediately, Beaux Barfield is the official race director of INDYCAR. The decision, made by INDYCAR CEO Randy Bernard promises the move will help rebuild the open-wheel racing series. In the wake of last October’s season-ending race concluding with a crash that proved fatal for the two-time Indy 500 champion, Dan Wheldon, INDYCAR officials and directors have felt it’s time for a change in image both on and off the motor speedway. “This is a critical position from a safety, competition and spectator standpoint,” said Zak Brown, president of Zionsville-based motorsports marketing firm Just Marketing International and a former race car driver. “With the new chassis and engine packages coming out, it will be even more critical in terms of governing the technical specifications. It’s not just about dropping the green and checkered flags.”
For INDYCAR the time for change couldn’t be more critical. In addition to attempting to increase sponsorship revenue as well as attendance and television ratings, the series will be unveiling the aforementioned chassis as well as a new system of engines for the first time in 9 years. As these changes make the motor speedway in hopes of increasing safety, structure and overall profitability for the open-wheel racing organization, Barfield, a former Le Mans and Formula 2000 racer himself, will be facing much scrutiny. And given his lack of open-wheel racing experience, he’ll be hard-pressed making his debut at the Indianapolis 500.
The previous director, Brian Barnhart had faced tons of controversy over his decisions, including the previous season by opting to start a race in the rain, leading to an accident and another race with several safety trucks on the track which thankfully lead to many near-misses but no accidents. Richard Bernard, when making the decision after a seven-week courting process believes that Barfield can make the differences INDYCAR needs to grow as an organization. “Though Beaux’s most recent experience is in sports car racing, his roots are in open-wheel racing,” Bernard said.
Facing a tough transition, Barfield is appreciative and ready to embrace the next challenge to bring more to the motor speedway. “I grew up around racing, so I’ve been involved in it all my life,” Barfield said. “The one thing that I wanted to do as a race driver growing up in America was to be involved with the Indy 500. When my driving career took a change of course and I found myself officiating, it was still a goal of mine to get to Indy car racing and the Indy 500. In that regard, it represents the pinnacle of my aspirations as a race official. I’m truly honored to be a part of IndyCar.”

The Chartered Market Technician (CMT) is a certification for technical analysts by the Market Technician’s Association (MTA). It ratifies someone’s skills at technical analysis and could help them obtain a better, higher paying position or more clients, by proving their dedication to the profession and acomplishment within it.
As of February 9, 2005 those who have passed CMT levels 1 and 2 exams are now exempt from the 86 exam for becoming a Registered Research Analyst from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).
(It does not exempt technical analysts from passing the Regulatory Series 87 examinations, however.)
The CMT certification has three levels. You haven’t earned the certification until you’ve passed all three exams, and you must become an MTA member within five years.
It is designed to force technical analysts to study the entire broad area of technical analysis. Some technicians may be limited to a few signals or chart formations they’re familiar with.
The Level 1 exam is an entry level one that tests on definitions. The reading list includes chapters from:

Currently, there are about 1,000 CMTs, with another 2,000 analysts studying for the certification.

NASCAR Tracks: Daytona International Speedway

The Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida is home to some of the most significant NASCAR races there are. It is a 2.5-mile track and can seat 168,000 fans. Other racing associations share the track too so it is not exclusively a NASCAR facility. It is home to the race most Americans know because it has been around for so long: The Daytona 500. NASCAR sponsors this event as the NEXTEL Cup • ” Daytona 500 • ” “The Great American Race.”
In 2008, the 50th Annual NEXTEL Cup Daytona 500 race will be held. The NASCAR Daytona 500 is a 500-mile race that consists of 200 laps. This race will begin the NASCAR season on February 17th. The winner of the Daytona 500 gets awarded the Harley J. Earl Trophy. Harley J. Earl was an automobile designer who served as the second NASCAR commissioner. The Harley J. Earl Trophy will be plated in gold instead of silver for the 2008 race.
The NASCAR Daytona 500 has a unique qualifying procedure. The top 35 teams from the previous year’s competition are automatically qualified to compete in the current Daytona 500 race at the Daytona International Speedway. There are 150-mile qualifying races held one week before the big race and the two top drivers from the qualifications will be added to the 35. Other top qualifiers will fill the remaining spots to 43 and previous NASCAR champions without a spot will be given priority.
The Daytona International Speedway has seen its share of exciting victories throughout its history. For example, take the Daytona 500 victory in 1976 where David Pearson just barely beat out the King of Racing Richard Petty. The two actually wrecked on their dart for the finish and both cars went into spins. Richard Petty’s car stalled out when it went into the infield. Pearson managed to get his car over the finish line at 30 mph. All this excitement happened just 20 yards from the finish line.
The Daytona 500 has had its share of tragedies. In 2001 Dale Earnhardt was killed in a crash on the last turn of the last lap of the race. Dale Earnhardt had won at this track 34 times. It was suspected that some car modifications allowing drivers to break faster caused this and they were discontinued in the rules after this fatal race. The modifications made the cars more aerodynamic and allowed more cars to take the lead during a race. The idea was to inject more excitement into NASCAR racing at the Daytona International Speedway as well as other tracks.

The Daytona 500 made news with Dale Earnhardt, Jr. getting the number 88 for his car in the upcoming 50th race.
